Brain Training
Imagining Wrist Strengthening = Wrist Strengthening
Clark, B. C., Mahato, N. K., Nakazawa, M., Law, T. D., & Thomas, J. S. (2014). The power of the mind: The cortex as a critical determinant of muscle strength/weakness. Journal of Neurophysiology, 112(7), 3219-3226. doi: 0.1152\jn.00386.2014
This is one of my favorite studies to demonstrate the power of imagining! In this study, there were two groups that agreed to have their non-dominant wrist immobilized in a cast.
One group wasn't given any special instruction. The other group was instructed to mindfully IMAGINE doing wrist exercises everyday for a certain amount of time.
At the end of the study, the group that simply imagined doing the wrist exercised lost 50% LESS muscle mass than did the other group.
